Right now my return to Costa Mesa ( city which hosts my car ) involves hiking out of my latest adventure.

I tried to hike at 55 and this resulted in a blister that may lay me up one extra day before my final push to Cabazon, Ca. I also attempted to drive 60 in the Bay Area once and was cited for speeding. I'm fighting that one in court.

Note to self: Have an Itinerary and keep it. This is best done with planning, who knew!

Gotta say right about now BOONDOCKING would be really freakin' cool. ;)

I forgot some of the distances required to make the hike successful. I can't help but think of how nice it would be to read an online journal of my hike into the slabs. Going on memory doesn't work well for me, since I have no memory and all!

I do plan to write about my experience in the slabs and my awesome 28 day road trip through Cali and Arizona. I miss my road dog, what an awesome time!

"No man ever followed his genius till it misled him. Though the result were bodily weakness, yet perhaps no one can say that the consequences were to be regretted, for those were a life in conformity to higher principles. If the day and the night are such that you greet them with joy, and life emits a fragrance like flowers and sweet-scented herbs, is more elastic, more starry, more immortal, -that is your success. All nature is your congratulation, and you have cause momentarily to bless yourself. The greatest gains and values are the furthest from being appreciated. We easily come to doubt if they exist. We soon forget them. They are the highest reality.....The true harvest of my daily life is somewhat as intangible and indescribable as the tints of morning or evening. It is a little star-dust caught, a segment of the rainbow which I have clutched." -Henry David Thoreau

"Time waits for no one." - anonymous HOTTIE!

Cheers, Hiker Mike

Keep your eye on the prize

"Still, the last sad memory hovers round, and sometimes drifts across like the floating mist, cutting off the sunshine and chilling the remembrance of happier times. I can hear his words anytime I'm struggling and beating myself up. "Positive thinking Mike Brown." These words have had a big impact on my thinking in the last year. I try very hard to be positive. It requires a lot of work and you need the necessary tools.

I believe I've found a missing piece that can bring things together for me. A tool I've been missing. The missing piece is meditation. I've never given meditation a chance. Mostly because I know nothing about it. Recently however meditation gave me a chance.

If you know me you know that I'm all over the place. High voltage is running through my veins. I exercise as much as possible to burn off this energy. Sometimes this only agitates the situation. The more I work the more energy I have.

Last night I attended a meditation class. The class was much different than what I expected. The seats were comfortable, the lights were low, and the messages on the walls were very inspirational and peaceful. Within a few minutes I was relaxed, very relaxed. In fact I think I fell asleep. A very relaxing sleep. When the class was finished I had a sense of peace that is very kind to the spirit. I felt great. I think my experience has made me a believer in meditation. Meditation left me feeling very positive.

I try to live for others. To be as helpful as possible. This is a work in progress, I'm starting to believe that through prayer and meditation I can improve. As I improve I'm noticing certain promises in my life are being fulfilled.

Something has found me, and I like it a lot.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://succapunch.blogspot.com/2012/01/chillin-da-most.html' title='Chillin' ( when I was young I loved to spend all day calling the radio station to be the caller number whatever and win a prize ) Z100 was promoting the movie "The Full Monty". In this movie 5 unemployed guys came up with an idea to supplement their income by doing a 1 night only strip tease. Z100 decided they wanted a piece of this action. They were putting out a casting call to the listeners looking for 5 overweight, unemployed guys who could dance. Timing being everything in a persons next adventure I knew this was my que to call. (As a kid calling in to win I was always disappointed because they never answered ) I dialed the number and waited for the usual letdown. Ring, ring, ring. "Good morning Z100 morning zoo" ( wow they answered and we're live and on air ) I don't remember the exact conversation but in typical fashion I again nailed the interview. They wanted to know if I could dance, and I told them not only could I dance I can tear up a dance floor with a couple Cap'n and coke's. Plus I told them I was a fat lazy bastard amd I had just ate breakfast and went straight back to bed. This was good enough to get me an in studio interview the following morning where I would compete against 20 other guys for 5 spots.

Normally I would've never given myself a chance to make the cut. This time was different, I felt I was destined to make the top 5. I certainly had all the prerequisites. To keep the story moving we will just say I blew away the competition, all except one, the "one armed Monty" ( Yes a one armed guy made the cut, he danced to chumbawamba ) Feeling confident I chose "Busta move" by Young MC as the title track to my strip tease. All week Z100 promoted the event on the radio. A winner takes all "Full Monty" strip tease at the Refectory in Portland, Or. All I had to do to keep the gig was stay unemployed and out of shape. This I could do.

As the day grew near that I would get up on the stage and "bare all" in front of total strangers I began to get nervous. My nerves gave way to anxiety and anxiety gave way to terror. As I sat in my truck outside the Refectory, terrified, I pondered my options. I decided running for the hills was the right choice and made a run for it. As I was driving away I began thinking about the money and whipped a bitch on 82nd ave. ( I no longer look down on woman who dance for a living, a one dollar bill is a powerful motivator ) I figured I could use the money, besides how many people could possibly show up on a Thursday night. I figured the place would be mostly empty, I could do my thing get paid and get out.

I went inside and was shown the way to the dressing room. We rehearsed a group dance and received some instruction from a couple of professional male dancers. The biggest message from these guys was to give the girls room. Do not initiate contact, they don't dig it like guys do. Instead just dance close to them and they will shower you with money. ( I found this advice to be mostly true ) With about an hours worth of instruction and a couple cocktails ( pun intended ) I was ready. Thankfully we were issued a G string banana hammock since going "full monty" was against the liquor law. ( mine was hot pink )

About a half hour before the 'curtains dropped' ( intended, again ) I could hear the small crowd getting noisy. A little to noisy for a small Thursday crowd. I went and asked 'Nelson' from Z100 how many people they expected. He told me the show had sold out a week ago. WHAT! OMG, where are my truck keys?! I gained my composer and asked him exactly what is sold out. He told me 500 tickets. 500 women, 5 men. Whoa, I come form California where the ratio is phenomenal but this was to be unprecedented in my lifetime. ( please show me to the bar I'm going to need a drink to get through this )

I played the scene out in my mind and tried to block out the laughter and fun pointing that was about to take place. Everything started to speed up, under my clothes was a very tight, very uncomfortable G string, and I was about to bare all to over 500 woman. My time on the stage was a blur ( possibly a blackout I don't remember ) I do remember that I kept my distance and the money was everywhere. Earlier I said I found it mostly true that woman avoid contact, well some go to the extreme in initiating contact, they're also willing to pay for the contact. In this case it was lipstick kisses on the cheek. I found on this night that woman who attend a strip tease are all class. I went home alone with over $2000 in one's, five's, ten's, and even twenty's. ( It's a good thing I went home alone as my girlfriend probably wouldn't have approved of me bringing my work home )

I didn't win the 'winner takes all door money' that night. I finished a distant second to the 'one arm monty' My strip tease was weak. I peeled my clothes off as fast as possible, it was hilarious. I did beat 'Big Ass Ed' who was packing a volkswagon in his banana hammock, so, I felt pretty good about myself. I drove home with lipstick kisses on my face, two grand, and a grin from ear to ear. I was very happy that I made that u-turn on 82nd ave.

This entire event was recorded on the 1997 Christmas DVD/CD-Rom that Z100 sold that year. ( I refer to this as my sex tape ) I have a copy somewhere at home, I haven't watched it in years. I don't really need to it still seems like yesterday. Sometimes that happens when you live the dream. The good memories are so vivid it makes all the reasons you shouldn't have done it insignificant. I hope this story motivates the reader to seize the New Year, to keep living the dream, and continue to pile up the fun memories. My life has been a great experience and I plan to experience more great times. 2012 is looking epic already, I can't wait. ;)

Happy New Year ya'all, Busta move!

"If you don't do it this year you will be one year older when you do." -Warren Miller

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, and most importantly Happy Birthday!

"..nothing so liberalizes a man and expands the kindly instincts that nature put in him as travel and contact with many kinds of people. " Mark Twain

As I reflect on 2011, especially the last 4 months, I still find myself motivated by 'Into the Wild'. Lately I've been reading Thoreau's 'Walden', and 'Hawaii' a novel by James Michener. I find myself jumping back and forth from one book to another depending upon my mood. Each time I switch to Into the Wild I become more fascinated by the story. Especially McCandless's conclusion that "happiness is only real when shared." To me this is a very powerful insight.

My original quest, when I departed October 9th, was to challenge myself against solitude. ( Someday I would like to sail to Hawaii, solo) The desert offered a good man against the elements scenario. The desert can be harsh, so too can the ocean. (Not to mention it's Wintertime and the weather is great) I'm a bit of a searcher, I'm after exercise, weight loss, knowledge against the elements, and as always a great adventure.

At first I was trying to eat bare minimum while drinking lots of water, I pulled this off for nearly two weeks. I felt great. I once worked a job in 2007 that required drinking lots of water. It was amazing to me how much energy I felt and how healthy it made me feel. I figure sailing for 3 weeks across the pacific is going to require eating small rations and drinking lots of water. I think small rations because I don't want to be 300 pounds when I get to Oahu. Also, what if I get stranded in the water for a month and run out of food. No good. I think I have accomplished my goal of this exercise. I have gained very good knowledge that I'm going to need, and the discipline it's going to take to pull it off.

My thought now is whether I the same Hiker Mike that left October 9th. I think not. ( I wasn't actually Hiker Mike yet, although I was hiking; that is neither here nor there. :) Since coming to the slabs I have found a social network and learned some things about myself that makes me rethink my plans. I would still like to sail to Hawaii, to accomplish this trip solo would be a great feat. I'm not so sure however that I still hold steadfast to making the trip solo, or maybe going solo has a different meaning now.

Recently I finished the book "Sailing alone around the world". Honestly it didn't motivate me to jump in a boat and set sail. The more I think about it, I wanted to sail alone for the wrong reasons. Or, maybe I already did set sail alone and I'm good with what I've learned from it. I think what I want is to sail to Hawaii with somebody who wants to sail to Hawaii.

I believe Happiness is best when shared. I have experienced happiness on my current journey and I don't want it to end. I want to share.

Casting off the bowlines,

Hiker Mike

Insane Dedication

Merry Christmas!

My blog today is something I wrote on succapunch.com in 2004. I find this article fitting for today as I apply it to my life. Sometimes I escape in order to find myself, it's actually more like I'm looking for something I've lost or forgotten about myself. Sometimes I find things I didn't even know I had. I'm amazed to have found two very good friends in my current quest. I've also had the chance to share stories with a like minded person who has opened me up in very good ways, I am so grateful. To these people, you know who you are, I say Cheers. Not just hitting home runs, but every
aspect of hitting. Practice going to right, practice hitting up the middle,
practice pulling the ball. Practice hitting line drives, practice hitting BOMBS.
What is frequently left unsaid, however, is the mental preparation necessary for
hitting. What frame of mind are you in when you step into the box? What kind of
day did you have at work? How does your wife - or husband - feel about you being
there tonight, or gone for the weekend? These are all distractions from your
purpose of the moment, which is hitting. And as a good friend - and fine
ballplayer - once said, "If you don't bring it with you when you come, you
aren't gonna find it when you get there." Physically, mentally, or
spiritually. If you aren't prepared beforehand, you aren't suddenly going to
find yourself ready to participate once the game begins.

The key to playing in the zone is to play in the moment, to ignore the
distractions, to focus so intently on what you are doing, that nothing else in
the world exists. Baseball players often describe hitting streaks as times when
the ball looks as big as a watermelon as it wafts slowly to the plate. Time
slows perceptibly, the ball appears larger than normal. And the reason is
simple. Their focus is so fine, so pinpoint, that the object of their attention
seems literally to grow. They immerse themselves in the object - the baseball -
so much that they cease to hear the clamoring crowd, to consider defensive
alignment, to be aware, even, of exactly what the pitcher is trying to do.
Because it doesn't matter. All that matters is seeing the ball.

Similarly in softball, we all have these moments, standing on deck, or out in
the field waiting for our next at-bat, when we know without question that when
we step into the box something good will come of it. We'll get the big base hit
- or, physical attributes allowing, the home run - and there is nothing the
pitcher or the defense can do about it. And frankly, it doesn't necessarily
require that we get the perfect pitch. Whatever junk he throws at us, we'll hit.
In fact, we are going to crush the ball. Because we are absolutely focused on
what we are doing.

And that focus can be practiced. When swinging in batting cages, assess the
quality of what you are doing. Are you simply throwing tokens into the machine
and working up a sweat? Or do you have a purpose in mind? No, you CAN'T think
and hit at the same time. And thinking about hitting is not the same as focusing
on hitting. Neither is concentrating on concentrating. You have to focus on the
ball, or better yet, at a point on the ball. All consideration of swing
mechanics, of weather conditions, of physical discomfort must be left outside
the cage, or outside the batter's box.

One practice technique that is particularly effective is to waste a round
when it's your turn to take some cuts. Slip the token into the slot, take your
stance, and watch the pitches go by. Do not swing the bat. Practice seeing the
ball from its point of release to its location in the strike zone. Judge the
quality of your concentration. Did you, in fact, see the ball all the way to the
backstop, or did your eyes or your mind wander? If you can't follow the ball in
practice, how do you expect to do it in a game?

Likewise, in game situations, feel free to take a pitch, even if it's a
strike, even if it's perfect. Use that pitch as you would a practice swing
on-deck. Let your eyes see the pitch from the pitcher's release point, from his
particular delivery. You've got three strikes to play with, why not use them
wisely? even in a league that starts hitters with a one-and-one count, the
pitcher still has to throw two strikes to get you out. And one of them is free.

Preparing yourself to hit requires much more than loosening the muscles; be
fully prepared each time you set yourself to hit. As the old saying goes: See
the ball, Hit the ball. It's no more complicated than that.

Dynamic, Positive, and Optimistic

( I plan to write this piece in geographic segments. Hopefully you will stick with me on this as I am remote at the time and it makes regular postings difficult. )

"Do what you love and you will never work a day in your life." -Confucius

I have had a very fortunate life. Growing up I fished, hunted, raced dirt bikes, and played sports. I spent summers with my brothers and sisters traveling around southern California in an RV with our Granny Brown. We stayed in campgrounds where I found all of my favorite activities existed in abundance. I was also fortunate to grow up with a mother who let her kids be who they wanted to be. She encouraged us to do what we loved, anything was realistic. Anything.

After graduating from Rio Linda High in 1987 I was gifted a trip to my Grandpa Lorenzen's in Lake of the Ozarks, Mo. I spent the summer hanging drywall, water skiing, and collecting baseball cards. ( I know it's a dorky thing, but very profitable ) As the summer progressed I worried about what I was going to do when it ended. Should I go to school, if so where? Should I go to work, if so where? That's when it happened, the answer I was looking for. We were in Chicago visiting a cousin who took me to Wrigley field. An amazing highlight of life as I am a huge baseball fan. My cousin was ordering a beer while we watched the game. I looked at the beer, the beer man, and the baseball field. I asked the beer man how he liked his job and he told me he loved it, he told me I should get the same job. ( Hmmm, I didn't even think it was possible to get a job like his, I just figured a job like his was handed down, generation to generation. ) He told me he gets to see every home game and the stands are filled with hot chicks. Wow, what a job! I had to have this job.

Immediately upon my return home I shot down to Arco Arena, the home of the Sacramento Kings. I filled out an application and waited for an interview. The man who interviewed me was named Ted, great guy. I told Ted I was interested in working in the arena where i could see the game. I wanted to be the "Beer Man". I told Ted that I was at a Cubs game and the beer man at Wrigley had the best job on earth. Turns out Ted was a Cubbie fan, we spent 30 minutes talking about baseball. 17 years old and I had just nailed my first ever interview. Unfortunately I wasn't old enough to sell beers in the stands. *crushed* I was however old enough to sell soda's. *exalted* Selling soda was good enough for me. Lucky for me we also sold diet soda, chicks dig diet soda!

During the next 5 years I spent the money I made at Arco on fishing and hunting. I attended hundreds of sporting events and rock concerts. Magic, Michael, Larry, Ozzy, and Hulk Hogan. What a life.

As the seasons passed so too did the hawkers. Usually they were much older than I and disgruntled about life. I never understood as I listened to them complain about the job. Maybe it's because we were union and that's just the way it is. Anytime they would complain I would mention the fact that we get paid to watch NBA games and sometimes we have to give out popcorn or soda and make change. Seems like a fair trade. I think answers like this one was the reason why I did a lot of standing by myself during down time. Sometimes people don't appreciate candor, who knew.

I have sold popcorn to Steve Alford, Larry Bird, Mark Eaton, Mr. T, and the Phoenix Gorilla ( this was cool because it was a set-up stunt where he grabs the popcorn basket and gives out the popcorn for free, the PG tips very well too) . I have also found myself donating free popcorn to the guys on the bench and the Kings fast break girls because I was standing to close to the court. Although it cost me money it was sometimes worth it. On one occasion I was on the court in the closing seconds of the half when Jordan broke down Reggie Theuss off the dribble from half court and dunked on the Kings entire back court. No chance I was quitting this job because I thought it sucked, they could've made me stay 2 hours late picking up trash in the stands and I would've still shown up at the next event with a smile on my face. ( God bless the Union )

There could only be one reason I would ever leave, it would have to be for a better job that included fishing, hunting, or sports. Such a job presented itself in 1992. It would take me to Alaska and lead to some of the best adventures of a lifetime.

"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. He will put some things behind, will pass an invisible boundary; new, universal, and more liberal laws will begin to establish themselves around and within him; or the old laws be expanded, and interpreted in his favor in a more liberal sense, and he will live with
